Julia Cranney
Julia Cranney is a state-educated, neurodiverse writer, director and actor born and based in Liverpool. Her TV credits include work with Warp Films, Sky Studios, Paramount Plus & BBC Teach and she currently has shows in development with Nicola Shindler’s Quay Street Productions, Lime Pictures, Roughcut and Moonriver TV alongside writing sitcom Gathered with musical comedian of the year Alex MacKeith.
For stage, her work includes the award-winning Moments and Empty Beds and she is currently developing new plays Attachment with the Liverpool Everyman and Children’s Party with The Wardrobe Ensemble (supported by NT Studios).
She has written three features with Reel One films which have screened on Channel 5 in the UK and Paramount Plus worldwide. She was nominated for Best Debut Writer at the Edinburgh TV festival New Voice Awards in 2022 for her work on EastEnders. Her debut short as co-Director/Writer with Helen Simmons MEASURE was supported by the BFI and has screened at Academy, BFI and BAFTA qualifying festivals worldwide, picking up multiple award nominations and winning the prestigious Méliès Award for Best European Short Film at Terror Molins.
She teaches across the BA, MA and MfA Acting programmes at Drama Studio London. She is also the mum to four-year-old Nina.
