Engage Programme

Investigating the link between creative writing, self-belief and belonging

Helping to combat the engagement dip from Year 7 to 8, First Story’s new programme, Engage, builds enjoyment of writing as well as a sense of belonging for year 7 to 8 students. 

More than 1 in 4 pupils begin to disengage from school during Year 7 according to Mind the Engagement Gap (2025). For Young people, enjoyment and a understanding that their voice matters is key.

First Story’s Engage Programme provides 11-13-year-olds with opportunities to connect with their peers and look to a professional Writer-in-Residence as a role model. The programme promotes confidence, wellbeing and community.

Schools receive 

• 16 high quality weekly workshops focused on building young writers’ confidence and self-belief
• A Writer-in-Residence as an inspiring role model
• Professional development for teachers working alongside the Writer-in-Residence
• Summer holiday resources to maintain writing engagement

• Professionally published anthology with funded copies for every participating student and the school
• Support to run an anthology launch event in spring term 2027
