We invited First Story Alumni to an in-person event at The London Library on 8 November. It was a chance for those who’d taken part in the Young Writers Programme to meet each other, and us, and take part in a Q&A and writing workshop with acclaimed author Yassmin Abdel-Magied. Alumni travelled from across London, Hertfordshire and Derby to attend the event. Some had completed the programme recently and others over 10 years ago.
Yassmin, who is both a Trustee of the London Library and a First Story Writer, discussed her path to writing – via a career in engineering – and answered questions, before leading attendees through short writing exercises. Alumni were asked to write letters to their 10-year-old selves and, imagining the future, their 60-year-old selves.
After the workshop, there was a chance to mingle and chat with each other, Yassmin, and First Story staff over a drink and nibbles.
It was a lovely and inspiring evening and wonderful to see like minded young writers coming together. We are committed to continuing to support our Alumni’s talent and potential and greatly value them as a community of young writers.
