Register students who have taken part in First Story’s Young Writers Programme as Young Mentors.

As First Story Young Mentors, students can:

act as ambassadors and encourage students to take part in the Young Writers Programme.

enable their peers to see something in themselves they might not have seen alone.

work with the Writer-in-Residence to support activities in the Young Writers Programme.

collaborate with other Young Mentors to run an event, such as the anthology launch.

Young Mentors will gain new skills and insights from the experience — and help grow a supportive community of young writers in your school. Afterwards, we will ask students to reflect on the learning and new skills they have acquired.

First Story Young Mentors can also access fantastic opportunities including:

developing organisational, communication, interpersonal and teamworking skills.

interviewing an author at a Young Writers Festival

earning volunteering hours for a Duke of Edinburgh Award (minimum Bronze Level).

listing their achievements in their UCAS Application, on their CV, or in their portfolio.

What is the First Story Young Mentors Programme?

This opportunity was developed in response to demand from students for a second year of support and opportunities, once their participation in our flagship Young Writers Programme comes to an end. Taking part in Young Mentors will platform your students’ talent, skills and achievements. It will activate youth voice, empowering young people to influence a culture of creative writing in their schools and communities.

This year we want to provide Young Mentor opportunities to all of our partner schools, alongside further opportunities for Young Mentors to get involved in school and First Story events.
