Bali Rai was born in Leicester and dreamt about three things growing up: playing football for Liverpool FS, being Bob Marley and becoming a writer. Luckily for us, he did at least one of those things.
Bali writes the sort of books he and his friends would have loved at school. His work is inspired by his working-class Punjabi upbringing in Leicester, and he writes accessible material for children of all ages and backgrounds.
All of Bali’s teen titles have been short-listed for awards across the UK. His first novel, (un)arranged marriage, won the Angus Book Award and the Leicester Book of the Year; and was shortlisted for the prestigious Brandford Boase first novel award. He’s been twice shortlisted for the Booktrust Teenage Prize. Rani and Sukh, his third novel, represented the UK at the International IBBY awards.
