First Story schools may nominate ONE student each student to attend our annual summer residential programme at the Arvon Centre, Lumb Bank in rural West Yorkshire.
A total of 16 places are available. Nominated students must submit a statement (max. 300 words) to First Story, outlining why participating in the summer residential would benefit their creative writing.
First Story will select the 16 strongest application statements to be awarded a place. A reserve list will be maintained and, should any of the first 16 students decline or drop-out, we’ll offer that place to a name from the waiting list (chosen at random).
First Story organises regional transport to collect and drop students back to a central location.
Students will be supervised by two First Story staff members acting in loco parentis at all times.
The residential is subsidised by Arvon and First Story and entirely free of charge for students, including accommodation and catering.
Please make sure nominated students understand that they’ll be the only person from their school at the residential. This can seem daunting, but it also has the potential to be a life-changing experience — especially for those considering writing as part of their future career.
A degree of independence is expected and we encourage time away from social media and mobile phones. Participants also prepare meals and eat together, which is all part of the experience.
